About Vera

We built Vera because the bottled water industry is designed to be confusing.

Labels show mountains and glaciers. Marketing copy promises “pure,” “natural,” and “pristine.” But the actual data — mineral composition, contaminant testing, source verification, packaging safety — is buried in PDFs on obscure brand websites, filed with regulatory agencies, or simply never published at all.

For most people, choosing a water brand comes down to aesthetics: the shape of the bottle, the font on the label, the price point.

We thought that was worth fixing.

What Vera Is

Vera is an independent water quality platform. We research, score, and explain bottled water products using a methodology grounded in peer-reviewed science and publicly available data. Our scoring system — the Vera Purity Index — evaluates every product across seven dimensions: contaminant safety, testing transparency, water source, packaging materials, PFAS and microplastic status, mineral profile, and brand track record.

Every score has a reason. Every reason has a source.

How We Work

Scan a barcode. Within seconds you get a full report — what's in the water, where it comes from, how it's treated, and what the packaging is made of. No searching, no interpreting fine print, no guessing.

Behind every report is a scoring engine built on peer-reviewed toxicology, WHO and EPA standards, and real contaminant data. The full methodology is public. Read it here.

Products reviewed by our team carry a Verified badge. Everything else shows a confidence score so you know exactly how much trust to place in each report. We'd rather tell you what we don't know than pretend we do.

We are not affiliated with any water brand. We accept no advertising from the industry we cover. Our only interest is accuracy.

Our Standards

We hold ourselves to the same transparency standards we apply to the brands we score. Our full scoring methodology — including every formula, every scientific reference, and every weighting decision — is published openly on this site. If you disagree with an approach, or think we've got something wrong, we want to hear it.

Science is not static. As new research emerges — on PFAS, on microplastics, on the health effects of specific minerals — we update the methodology and recalculate affected scores. Every significant change is documented.

Why Water

Water is the one thing every person on earth consumes every single day, often multiple times a day, for their entire life. The cumulative effect of that exposure — to minerals, to contaminants, to plastics, to disinfection byproducts — is not trivial.

The science on this is clear and growing: the quality of your water matters for cardiovascular health, cognitive function, dental health, endocrine function, and cancer risk.

And yet most people have never once looked at a water quality report.

We want to change that. Not by alarming people, but by making the information accessible, understandable, and actionable. A score out of 100. A plain-English explanation. A source for every claim.
